Room Pricing vs. Square Foot

It is the eternal debate, so why not resurrect it one more time?

Get a room of carpet cleaning business owners together and ask the question, "Do you price per room or by the foot?" and you get a mixed bag.

It seems the room pricers are trying to save time by pricing on the phone, while the foot pricers want to be "more exact" and look at the job.

Does it really matter which pricing method you choose? Isn't it about what you earn at the end of the day?

What do you think?

I've done both, honestly by square footage makes more sense to me for a couple of reasons. Primarily, I want to be able to put eyes on the areas needing cleaning first and discuss potential issues with the customer prior to setting a price. Second, and I use wording to help "sell" the customer on the price by room approach, price by room is based upon "average" room size and conditions/materials. If the master bedroom, or some other room is huge, has specialty carpet (wool or extremely high end carpet) how does that fit into "by the room"? That great room or basement may be 2-3 "rooms" large, but in the customer's mind count as 1 room. How do you overcome that objection without the customer feeling cheated? Square footage pricing help overcome these objections, and affords you the opportunity for an inspection to address other "issues" as you and the customer walk the home together.

Room pricing can be a better deal, depending on what the prices are and how big your room is. However, if your rooms are tiny, square footage might be a better option for you personally. It really does matter which method you use because it can save you a lot of money if you do it right.

Have to say I love a mixture of a little bit of both, I personally find with our carpet cleaning business http://www.kwcarpetcleaners.com/, we always show up to our customers locations with a price chart per square foot showing prices after we measure and then offer any discounts we see fit (eg no carpeted stairs, or few big rooms as opposed to lots of small rooms) to then knock that price down to make a deal.

If you wash carpet yourself, it harms the threads of the carpet. So, it is good to hire professionals because they use protectants on the carpet which protects them from different harmful things and enhance their look.

Mold remediation providers will carefully seal and dispose of the removed mold removed to prevent infection.
